Harwich International Port Container Terminal is an exciting new development that will help to meet the need for additional port capacity that is essential to secure the UK’s future economic prosperity.

In October 2000 Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited announced that it had agreed to purchase the Bathside Bay site adjacent to Harwich International Port with the intention of developing a new, state-of-the-art, deep-water container terminal.

Harwich has a number of advantages as the site of much needed new port facilities:
As an extension of an existing facility greater economies can be realised than would be available in an all new, stand-alone, development
It shares, with the Port of Felixstowe, the deepest approach channel of any UK container port
Good road and rail connections already exist with further improvements under consideration
It enjoys an ideal location with minimal deviation for the large container ships serving North West Europe
The project enjoys strong levels of public support
